Pentwater

A laid-back Lake Michigan village on the channel to Pentwater Lake, with a state park beach, piers, a marina and a dune trail a short walk from downtown.

Pentwater is a laid-back small village made for beach days you can walk to. It sits on the Lake Michigan shore of Oceana County, where Pentwater Lake drains to the big lake through a channel, and its sandy beaches are a short walk from a downtown of shops and restaurants.

Head first to Charles Mears State Park. The 50-acre park sits on the north side of the channel between Lake Michigan and Pentwater Lake, with a designated swim beach, a fishing pier and a modern campground. You need a Recreation Passport to drive in, but from downtown you can walk.

The channel is the village’s front porch. Channel Lane Park, near the north pier, has pavilions, grills and restrooms, and Chester Street Park leads onto the south pier walkway for sunsets. For a quieter swim, the Bass Lake Outlet beach north of town is a shallow spot between Bass Lake and Lake Michigan, reached on foot or by boat. It has no facilities, and dogs are welcome. If you come by boat, the Pentwater Municipal Marina is just off Hancock Street in the middle of downtown.

Before you leave the park, take the short interpretive trail up Old Baldy, a dune formed by blowing sand. From the top you look out over Lake Michigan, the village and the harbor.

Then wander back downtown, where the Village Green hosts events through the year. On a rainy day, the Pentwater Historical Society Museum on Rutledge Street covers local history.

Outside the village, the Longbridge Road boardwalk looks over Pentwater Lake and is a spot for sunsets and birds. Pentwater Pathways, over 300 acres of foot-only trails in the Pentwater River State Game Area, is for hiking and trail running and turns into a cross-country ski area in winter, when the lake is ice-fished.

Why stop here

Pentwater suits a slow beach weekend. Walk from downtown to Charles Mears State Park on the north side of the channel for a designated swim beach, a fishing pier and a short interpretive trail up a dune called Old Baldy, then come back to a downtown of shops and restaurants around a village green that hosts events through the year.

Plan your Pentwater visit

How to plan a Pentwater trip: walking to Mears State Park, where to eat on Hancock Street, the piers, Thursday concerts, kids, festival weeks and winter.

Pentwater is a beach village you can do without the car. Hancock Street, the marina on Pentwater Lake, the channel piers and the beach at Charles Mears State Park are all close together, so one day covers the beach, the dune walk and a sunset on the pier. A second day takes you to the quieter beaches and boardwalks outside the village, or south to the big dunes at Silver Lake.

Getting there and getting around

US-31 passes just east of the village; the old business loop no longer runs through downtown. By our routing estimates, the drive takes about 1.5 hours from Grand Rapids, about 4 hours 25 minutes from Detroit and about 4.5 hours from Chicago. See getting here for the routes.

The closest airline airport is Muskegon County Airport, with flights to Chicago O’Hare; our estimate puts it about an hour away. Many travelers fly into Grand Rapids instead. Private pilots can land at Oceana County Airport or Mason County Airport near Ludington, each about 25 minutes away by our estimate.

Once you are here, park once and walk.

  • To the beach. Charles Mears State Park is at the west end of Lowell Street, a walk from downtown. Driving in needs a Recreation Passport, sold at the park, and on nice summer days the lot can fill by afternoon. Walking saves you the hunt.
  • The waterfront. The Pentwater Municipal Marina is just off Hancock Street, with benches and picnic tables over the harbor. Chester Street Park leads onto the south pier walkway, and Channel Lane Park by the north pier has pavilions, grills and restrooms.
  • Bikes. The Hart-Montague Trail, a 22-mile rail trail, runs through Oceana County outside the village if you want a longer ride.

Where to eat

Pentwater eats casually: burgers, decks over the water, a bakery by the marina and more ice cream than you need. Several places close for winter, so check before an off-season visit. These are places travel and regional writers single out:

  • The Brown Bear. A friendly sports bar on Hancock Street, home of the oversized Bear Burger, with 11 kinds of burger, pub food and plenty of Michigan beer. The upstairs patio looks over downtown.
  • Antler Bar. A long-running family tavern on South Hancock Street for a casual meal and a drink, with an upstairs bar and a deck over the Village Green. It is listed as open year-round.
  • The Village Cafe & Pub. Casual downtown dining on South Hancock Street, with a deck over Pentwater Lake and a pub downstairs. Check its current season and hours before you go.
  • Gull Landing. The big deck on Pentwater Lake, with live music and a view across the water to downtown. It is the summer evening spot; it is listed as open in summer only.
  • Cottage Garden Cafe. Breakfast or lunch by the Village Green, and a popular one.
  • Homebaked by Roxann. The bakery across Hancock Street from the municipal marina. Get coffee and a pastry and take them to the marina benches.
  • Green Isaac’s Coffee and Tea. The coffee stop on Hancock Street, with breakfast tacos, sandwiches, vintage sodas and baked goods. It is listed as open year-round.
  • Ice cream. Pentwater Dari Creme on North Hancock Street does soft serve, sundaes and flurries, plus funnel cake. House of Flavors downtown is known for its ice cream, serves lunch and dinner too, and draws a line in summer; check it is open before you go.
  • Cosmic Candy Co. The sweet stop for kids: a family-run shop downtown with candy, popcorn and ice cream.

Where to stay

Our Pentwater listing is the Days Inn by Wyndham Pentwater, a 60-room hotel off US-31 east of the village. Charles Mears State Park has a modern campground steps from the beach.

Our picks

Charles Mears State Park The beach day: a designated swim beach on Lake Michigan beside the harbor pier, a fishing pier, a picnic area and a playground. Swim at the designated beach, and check conditions before you go in.

Old Baldy The short interpretive trail in the state park, with stairs up a dune formed by blowing sand. From the top you look over Lake Michigan, the village and the harbor.

The piers at sunset Walk the south pier from Chester Street Park, or sit at the pierhead by the state park and watch boats come through the channel. In midsummer, sunset comes late in the evening.

Thursday night on the Village Green The Pentwater Civic Band plays free concerts on the green on Thursday evenings from late June through August, a tradition since 1947. Bring a lawn chair; kids dance on the grass.

Pentwater Farmers Market On the Village Green on Monday and Thursday mornings in season.

Bass Lake Outlet The quieter swim north of the village, a shallow spot between Bass Lake and Lake Michigan, reached on foot or by boat. There are no facilities, and dogs are welcome.

Longbridge Road boardwalk A boardwalk over Pentwater Lake outside the village, for sunsets and birds.

Day trip: Silver Lake State Park Not a Pentwater stop but a day trip south, near Mears. The park has big open dunes, Lake Michigan beach and a day-use area on inland Silver Lake. Guided dune ride tours are offered, and off-road vehicles have their own designated area. Different sections have different access rules, and not all of the dunes are open to vehicles, so check the park’s rules before you go. Bring your Recreation Passport.

One day, and two days

One day. Start with coffee from Green Isaac’s or a pastry from Homebaked by Roxann on the marina benches. Walk to Mears State Park for the morning on the beach, and climb Old Baldy before lunch. Spend the afternoon back on the sand, then have dinner on the deck at Gull Landing or a Bear Burger at the Brown Bear. Finish with ice cream and a sunset on the pier. On a summer Thursday, end on the Village Green for the band instead.

Two days. Breakfast at Cottage Garden Cafe, then spend the morning at Bass Lake Outlet or drive south to Silver Lake for the dunes. In the late afternoon, take in the Longbridge Road boardwalk at sunset. If it is a Monday or Thursday, start the day at the farmers market.

To keep driving up the shore, our lakeshore harbor towns trip and the West Michigan Pike route link Pentwater with Ludington and the towns to the south.

With kids, and on a rainy day

With kids. Mears State Park has the swim beach, a playground and the Old Baldy stairs to climb, and the state park lists weekly nature programs in spring and summer. AJ’s Adventureland on Business US-31 has mini golf, go-carts, an arcade and a playground. The children’s play area at North End Park in the village is another stop. Thursday band nights on the green are made for kids who like to dance, and Cosmic Candy is the reward.

On a rainy day. The Pentwater Historical Society Museum on Rutledge Street lists free admission and is open from June through October. Its exhibits cover the Armistice Day Storm with shipwreck artifacts, Native American history, Pentwater High School and the blocks of Hancock Street. Then browse the shops downtown and warm up with a drink at Green Isaac’s.

Best time to go

Summer is the season: the beach, the marina and the Thursday concerts are all going. Two festival weeks stand out:

  • July 3rd fireworks. Pentwater’s Independence Day show launches at dusk over Lake Michigan off the pier. Watch from Mears State Park, the pier or a boat. It is held around July 3; check the year’s date.
  • Homecoming. The village’s coming-home week starts on the second Thursday of August, with a Grand Parade and fireworks on the Saturday.

The shoulder seasons are quieter. In spring, the state park’s nature programs begin. In fall, the Village Green hosts a free craft festival with more than 80 artisan booths, and a Halloween Spooktacular in late October; Santa on the Green follows in late November.

We’d pick late June for a first visit: the Thursday concerts have started and the beach is open, before the festival weeks.

Winter

Winter in Pentwater is quiet and outdoorsy, and many seasonal spots close, so plan around the places listed as open year-round.

  • Ice fishing. Pentwater Lake is ice-fished in winter. The Pentwater River runs through the lake, so check ice conditions locally before you walk out.
  • Winterfest. It runs over two February weekends, with an ice fishing derby on the lake, the Snowman Scram 5K, a local art trail, and sledding and free ice skating on the Village Green (bring your own skates). Most activities were free; check the chamber for the next dates.
  • Cross-country skiing. Pentwater Pathways, more than 300 acres of foot-only trails in the Pentwater River State Game Area south of the lake, becomes a cross-country ski area when there is snow.
  • Food. Green Isaac’s is listed as open year-round, and so are the Brown Bear and the Antler Bar downtown.

Hours, menus and schedules change, so check with each place before you go.
