The Jewel is Grand Hotel’s 18-hole course, split into two nines about a mile and a half apart. The Grand Nine, across the road from the hotel, opened in 1901 and was redesigned by Jerry Matthews in 1987; it looks out over the Straits of Mackinac. The Woods Nine, a 1994 Matthews design in the island’s interior, has views toward the Mackinac Bridge and the Upper Peninsula.
Golfers ride a horse-drawn carriage between the two nines, a service the hotel says no other U.S. course offers. The course is open to hotel guests and visitors alike.
