Wawashkamo Golf Club

A nine-hole links-style course from 1898 in the interior of Mackinac Island, laid out on the site of the 1814 Battle of Mackinac Island.

Wawashkamo dates to 1898, when Alex Smith of Carnoustie, Scotland, laid out nine holes on farmland in the middle of Mackinac Island. The ground is the site of the August 1814 battle for the island: the first tee sits on the ridge where British cannon fired, and the first and fifth fairways cross the field where American troops advanced. The course is part of Mackinac State Historic Parks and is leased by the club, a nonprofit.

The design keeps a 19th-century links character, with few trees, no water, small greens and deep rough. Each hole has two sets of tees, so a second loop plays differently, according to the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau. Golf Digest named Wawashkamo one of America’s Historic Golf Landmarks in 1996. The course is open to the public, and golf carts are allowed on this car-free island.
