Grand Traverse & Inland Lakes · Antrim County

Elk Rapids

For paddlers and boaters: a village between East Grand Traverse Bay and Elk Lake, at the end of the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, with a harbor and downtown.

Elk Rapids is for people who arrive by water, or want to. This small Antrim County village sits on the east shore of Grand Traverse Bay, with East Grand Traverse Bay to the west and Elk Lake to the east, and the short Elk River carries the lake’s outflow through town into the bay.

Paddlers should start at Rotary Park. The village is the end point of the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, a state-designated route of more than 100 miles through 12 lakes and their connecting rivers, hosted by the nonprofit Paddle Antrim, and Rotary Park is one of its main trailheads. A rebuild led by Paddle Antrim and the village added a universally accessible non-motorized launch, restrooms, a boat washing station and a route to the Elk River boat channel.

Boaters have the Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor: a lower harbor that opens onto East Grand Traverse Bay, and an upper harbor with access to the Elk River and the chain of lakes. It takes transient reservations online starting each May 15, and downtown is a few steps away.

Then come ashore. For a swim, Veterans Memorial Park on the bay has a modest beach and a playground, and Dam Beach, next to the hydro plant off Ames Street, has a more natural feel near a popular fishing spot. Antrim County’s Day Park adds hiking trails and an outdoor sculpture walk.

The sandy shoreline draws sunbathers, the small downtown has shops and restaurants, and more than 300 miles of non-motorized trails are within a short drive. The village was named a Pure Michigan Trail Town in 2022.

On a rainy day, visit the library in the Island House, an 1865 home on the little Isle of Pines, or the Elk Rapids History Museum on Traverse Street, which opens Saturdays in July and August and by appointment.

Why stop here

Elk Rapids is for paddlers and boaters, with a beach for the rest of the family. It sits between East Grand Traverse Bay and Elk Lake, joined by the short Elk River, and it is where the Chain of Lakes Water Trail ends at the bay. The Rotary Park launch puts you on the water close to downtown, the village harbor is steps from the shops, and the state named the village a Pure Michigan Trail Town in 2022.

Plan your Elk Rapids visit

How to plan an Elk Rapids day: paddling the end of the Chain of Lakes, the harbor, bay and Elk Lake beaches, where to eat and Harbor Days.

Elk Rapids is a small village built around water: East Grand Traverse Bay on one side, Elk Lake on the other, and the short Elk River running between them through town. It is where the Chain of Lakes Water Trail ends, so paddlers and boaters get the most from it, but the beaches and a compact downtown make an easy day for anyone. A half day covers a swim and lunch; give it a full day if you are paddling.

Getting there and getting around

US-31 runs through the village just east of downtown. By our routing estimates, the drive takes about 2 hours 50 minutes from Grand Rapids, about 4 hours 50 minutes from Detroit and about 6 hours 10 minutes from Chicago. See getting here and the US-31 route from Traverse City to Petoskey.

The nearest airline airport is Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, which our estimate puts about 25 minutes away by car.

Downtown, the harbor, Rotary Park and the beaches are close together, so park once and walk.

  • By kayak. Rotary Park is a Chain of Lakes Water Trail trailhead with a universally accessible launch, restrooms and a boat washing station. Paddle Antrim lists routes that start or end here, from easy river paddles to an advanced open-water crossing of Elk Lake.
  • By boat. The Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor has a lower harbor on the bay and an upper harbor on the Elk River, with transient reservations opening online each May 15. The river is no-wake from the power dam up to the island.

Where to eat

Elk Rapids has more places to eat than its size suggests, most of them a short walk from the harbor. All of these are listed in the chamber’s current directory; check hours before you go.

  • Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen. Cajun and Creole cooking on Ames Street, from etouffee and jambalaya to po’ boys and blackened alligator, with a long bourbon list behind the bar.
  • Riverwalk Grill. A seasonal waterfront restaurant on Ames Street, with Michigan beers and cocktails and the option to tie up and eat by boat.
  • Chef Chuck’s Pizza. The downtown pizza stop on River Street, with sandwiches, salads, a walk-up window and gluten-free crust available.
  • Masala Magic by Anita. An Indian restaurant on Ames Street with biryani, pakora, naan and hot chai, plus ice cream and free vintage video games. Easy with kids.
  • Michigander Bakery & Coffee Co. The River Street bakery, formerly The Flour Pot, under new owners since December 2025. Scratch-made doughnuts, danish and muffins, and coffee roasted in-house.
  • Happy Camper Coffee Co. Another morning coffee stop on River Street.

Where to stay

The village pick is The Dexter Hotel, a small boutique hotel with suites a short walk from the shops, the marina and the bay. For rentals and the full list, see places to stay in Elk Rapids. For a bigger choice, Traverse City is a short drive south.

Our picks

Paddle into town. Start upstream on the Chain of Lakes and finish at Rotary Park, or paddle a short loop from the launch. Check wind and conditions before any crossing of Elk Lake.

Veterans Memorial Park. The bay beach in the village, modest and sandy, with a playground and courts.

Dam Beach. A more natural stretch next to the hydro plant off Ames Street, beside a popular fishing spot.

Day Park. Antrim County’s park on the bay, with hiking trails, a pavilion and the Walk of Art sculpture park.

The Island House. The library is in an 1865 home on the Isle of Pines, a small park island in the village.

Evening on River Street. On summer Wednesday evenings, River Street closes for live music, food and kids’ activities while the shops stay open late. Check the season’s dates.

A half day, or a full day

Half day. Coffee and a doughnut on River Street, a swim at Veterans Memorial Park, then lunch at Chef Chuck’s or Masala Magic.

Full day. Paddle a Chain of Lakes route in the morning, walk the Day Park trails and sculptures in the afternoon, and finish with dinner at Pearl’s or on the water at Riverwalk Grill. On a Wednesday in summer, end the night on River Street.

With kids, and on a rainy day

Veterans Memorial Park has the playground, and the piers and boardwalk are good for a first fishing lesson. On a rainy day, visit the Island House library or the Elk Rapids History Museum on Traverse Street, which is open Saturdays in July and August and by appointment.

Best time to go

Summer brings the boaters and the beach crowd. Harbor Days, the village festival since 1955, usually spans the end of July and the start of August, with the Grande Parade, races and fireworks on Saturday. The dates can shift, so confirm before you book.

September and October are quieter and still good on the water. Day Park keeps its parking lot open through October, and in fall salmon run up to the dam on the Elk River.

Winter

Elk Rapids is a quiet village in winter. Anglers fish the Elk River for steelhead from December into spring, and the piers and boardwalk are fished in every season; check current DNR rules first. In town, the bakery and Masala Magic are the places to warm up; call ahead for winter hours.

Hours, menus and schedules change, so check with each place before you go.

What regulars do

  • Harbor Days, which started in 1955 as a one-day fundraiser for the harbor, usually spans the end of July and the start of August and closes with fireworks. The dates can shift (2026 ran a week later than usual), so confirm before you book. Source
