Iceman Cometh Challenge

A point-to-point mountain bike race of about 30 miles from Kalkaska to Traverse City on the first Saturday in November, plus shorter beginner and kids races.

The Iceman is a big fall bike race that brings thousands of riders to Traverse City for a weekend in early November. More than 5,000 adult riders and a few hundred kids race across 77 age divisions.

If you are not riding, it is still a good spectator weekend. The main race fills well ahead (2026 had a waiting list), and registration has opened in early March.

What to expect

The main race runs about 30 miles through the woods from Kalkaska to Traverse City. The Slush Cup is a shorter course for newer riders, and the Sno-Cone and PopCycle are kids' races. The Friday before, an expo and packet pickup are held at Grand Traverse Resort, and an estimated 12,000 people watch along the course.
