State park · Charlevoix & Petoskey
Boyne City's state park on Lake Charlevoix, with a swimming beach, a boat launch, three modern campgrounds and 6.5 miles of trails.
Young State Park is where Boyne City goes to swim: 563 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Charlevoix just outside town, with a popular swimming beach, a picnic area and a playground.
It suits families and anyone who wants a lake day with a campground attached. The park lists three modern campgrounds and mini cabins, so book ahead if you are coming in summer. You need a Recreation Passport on your car to drive in (see licenses and passes).
Boaters have a launch and a boating access site, and anglers have a fishing pier. The park also lists paddling and paddlesport rentals in season; check with the park before you count on a rental.
Away from the water, 6.5 miles of trails wind through rolling woods, lowlands and cedar swamp, and you can pick up the Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail from the park. In winter the park lists cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The park dates to 1921, and its day-use building was put up by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
