Muskegon Lake is a boater’s lake with a comeback story. Outside the no-wake channels it is all-sports: ski, tube, sail and cruise. You get five launches, a state park shoreline and a channel straight out to Lake Michigan, on water that has been cleaned up after decades of industry. It reaches 79 feet at its deepest.

Boaters can tie up at the city’s Hartshorn Marina or at Adelaide Pointe, which keeps slips for transient boats and runs a self-serve fuel dock. In winter, anglers fish the ice for perch and pike; mind the commercial channel traffic and check ice locally.

It lies between the city of Muskegon and North Muskegon at the end of the Muskegon River. At 4,149 acres it is a drowned river mouth, a flooded river valley, connected to Lake Michigan by a navigation channel.

The cleanup is worth knowing about. For much of the last century, sediments here were polluted by nutrients, heavy metals, petrochemicals and PCBs from past municipal and industrial discharges, and the lake was named a Great Lakes Area of Concern. After years of restoration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency removed it from that list on September 26, 2025.

For a day on shore, head to Muskegon State Park, based in North Muskegon. It pairs Lake Michigan beach and forested dunes with a stretch of Muskegon Lake shoreline and the Snug Harbor boating area. Inside the park, a blockhouse first built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s stands on the highest point in Muskegon County.

Connected waters

A navigation channel joins the lake to Lake Michigan, so you can run out to the big lake from any launch on Muskegon Lake.

In winter

Muskegon Lake is ice-fished for perch, pike and some walleye. Tug and barge traffic between the south-end docks and the Lake Michigan channel can keep ice unsafe, and a vehicle has gone through near the northeast corner, so check conditions locally before you go out.
