Big M Trail System

Groomed cross-country ski and winter fat-tire bike trails, and summer singletrack, in the Manistee National Forest near Wellston.

Big M is where Manistee goes in winter: a trail system in the hardwood hills of the Manistee National Forest near Wellston, groomed for cross-country skiing and for fat-tire bikes. It suits skiers and riders of every level, and leashed dogs are listed as welcome on the hiking trails.

Skiers get about 18 miles of groomed trail, a plowed lot and a chalet. Fat bikers get about 25 miles of groomed singletrack in three difficulty levels, starting from the Big M shelter house. Beginners should stick to the easier loops first; the harder ones climb.

When the snow goes, the same singletrack turns into a summer mountain bike trail, listed from April to September and ridden one way, clockwise, with some sandy climbs.

Grooming depends on the weather, so check current conditions and any Forest Service fees before you head out.
