A house built in 1941 from about 60,000 glass bottles, now the Kaleva Historical Society's museum of local Finnish-American history.
Kaleva’s Bottle House is a small museum worth a stop if you are curious about local history or passing through on a weekend: a house built in 1941 from about 60,000 glass bottles, holding the village’s Finnish-American story.
Look at the walls first. John Makinen, who owned Kaleva’s soda bottling plant, built the house with many chipped or flawed bottles from his own factory and set the different colors in deliberate patterns. It drew curious travelers long before it became a museum, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Inside is the Kaleva Historical Society. Formed in 1969, it bought the property from the Makinen family in 1983 with money the community raised and made it the society’s permanent home. Exhibits cover early settlers, farming, cooperative businesses, the Kaleva School, local veterans and a well-known bank robbery. If your family has roots here, leave time for the extensive photo collection, where you can look for relatives or family homesteads.
Two exhibits stand out. The Makinen Tackle Room, opened in 2009, shows lures made by the Makinen Tackle Company, a Kaleva business started in 1945. Another covers the Kaleva Murals: six paintings unveiled in 1940 and created through the New Deal’s National Youth Administration, each showing a scene from the Kalevala, the Finnish epic that gave the village its name.
