South Beach is the family beach in Northport: a small village beach on Grand Traverse Bay, just south of the marina on Bay Street, with everything you need for an afternoon with kids.
You get a sandy swimming beach, public restrooms, picnic tables and a playground with a volleyball court. It is also home to the Northport Youth Sailing School. Groups can reserve the pavilion through the village.
It is a short walk from downtown and from the G. Marsten Dame Marina, so it pairs well with lunch in the village. Haserot Park, the downtown beach with a pier, is just on the other side of the marina.
No lifeguards are listed. For a longer walk on Lake Michigan sand, the Cathead Bay trails are in Leelanau State Park north of town, where you need a Recreation Passport on your car.
