Colonial Inn

In the Wequetonsing neighborhood of Harbor Springs

The Colonial Inn sits on Artesian Avenue in Wequetonsing, the summer cottage neighborhood on the Harbor Springs side of Little Traverse Bay, about a block from the water. The Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau dates it to 1894 and says it takes its name from its first proprietor, Colonel Eaton of the Michigan cavalry.

After Eaton and his widow, the inn passed to a German World War I veteran in the 1920s, then to co-owners John R. Davis, a Ford Motor Company vice president, and Fred Renker. Ray Brown and later his son Tim followed. It is a member of Historic Hotels of America.

The visitors bureau lists 42 restored rooms with in-room fireplaces. The inn’s own site mentions a pool and hot tub, breakfast for guests, an exercise room, a private dock with beach access, and the Little Traverse Wheelway close by for walking and cycling. Downtown Harbor Springs and its marina are nearby.
