Bay View Inn

On Woodland Avenue in Bay View, on Little Traverse Bay

The Bay View Inn stands on Woodland Avenue inside the Bay View Association, the Victorian summer community beside Petoskey on Little Traverse Bay. The inn describes Bay View as a National Historic Landmark community, and the Bay View Association lists the inn as one of two historic inns where its visitors can stay.

The building dates to the late 19th century and has gone by other names, including Hotel Howard and The Roselawn. Stafford Smith and his family restored and ran it for more than 60 years, and it was long known as Stafford’s Bay View Inn. Jon and Lauren Cotton are the current owners.

The visitors bureau lists 31 guest rooms, each with a private bath and Victorian decor, and the inn notes that rooms vary in their furnishings and views. Its full-service restaurant, the Roselawn Dining Room, is known for a seasonal Sunday brunch. Summer brings Bay View’s own program of music, theater and lectures, and guests can walk or bike into downtown Petoskey on the Little Traverse Wheelway.
